Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. Julian and Hazel met as medical school students. Both of their parents fled Eastern Europe to escape Nazi persecution. South Africa was one of very few countries that opened their doors to Jewish refugees. This spurred great loyalty to the South African government for their parents, however, Hazel and Julian despised South Africa’s Apartheid governance. Upon completion of their studies they to fled their birthplace. Their journey began with work in London, before Julian’s work eventually led them to Seattle.
